5 Ways to Celebrate Earth Day with your Pet

Today is Earth Day!

There is no better way (in my humble opinion) to celebrate the beauty of the Earth, than with the animals closest to us!

How can you celebrate Earth Day you ask?

1. Turn off the TV tonight, and take your dog for a nice long walk!

2. Use Earth Rated poop bags to clean up after your dog.

I have been using these bags myself for quite some time, and they are not only affordable, but they are also environmentally friendly. The bags you see below, which are the ones that I use, contain an additive that allows them to break down, unlike plastic bags. The Bay Area has made great strides toward reducing plastic consumption in recent years, and this is just another way to participate.

3. Purchase a pet bed made of renewable materials.

Have you heard of P.L.A.Y? P.L.A.Y stands for Pet Lifestyle and You. When I worked in San Francisco, I would walk past their office on Second Street every day, and one day I decided to learn a bit more about their products.

It turns out that they have a very strong green initiative. They have a line of pet beds that are made from PlanetFill polyfiber, which is made from plastic bottles. According to their website, there are 108 recycled bottles in one extra large bed.

4. Make your own upcycled cat toy!

Martha Stewart has a how-to tutorial on how to repurpose old menswear clothing into cut cat toys!

5. Save Water! If your pet loves to drink running water, instead of running the water from the sink, buy a Pet Fountain

The Drinkwell from PetSafe is designed by veterinarians, and promotes healthy water consumption, on top of saving water!

Does the Drinkwell require those awful batteries? Sounds like a good candidate for a little solar (or light) power.
