Recently, we wrote about Helping Your Pet Maintain a Healthy Weight. We discussed the importance of a healthy weight, how to determine your pet’s body condition score, and Hill’s® Science Diet® Perfect Weight line of dog and cat food.

Today, we want to take this conversation one step further and discuss Creating a Routine for Health.

Like any major accomplishment in your pet’s life, achieving a weight goal will take some planning and effort. I myself recommend developing a routine. Not only will your pet thrive from having a daily routine, they will also hold you accountable for your half of the agreement, further leading to your success.

Rooney’s Weekday Routine (M-F)

6:30am: Wake up, stretch and receive pets.

6:45am: Potty time

6:50am: Breakfast!

7-8am: Follow Mom around the house while she gets ready for work (this may include an attack on the blow dryer).

8am: Treats!

4pm: Dad gets home/Potty break!

6pm: Mom gets home/Dog Park/Walk

6:30pm: Dinner

7:00pm: Play with Toys/Look cute

8:00pm: Play with mom and dad/Run around the house

9:00pm: Play some more.

9:30pm: Potty break

10:00pm: Bedtime.

Although my husband and I work full time, and I wish Rooney was able to come to work with one of us, I shared this routine hoping that many other pet parents who work full-time can relate. Although we are gone for much of the day during the week, almost all of our before and after work hours are spent with Rooney providing him with a healthy routine. What’s more important to note is that Rooney is at his healthy weight. If we were on a weight loss journey, we would need to add more exercise to his daily schedule in the morning and on the weekends.

6:30pm: Dinner

7:00pm: Play with Toys/Look cute

8:00pm: Play with mom and dad/Run around the house

9:00pm: Play some more.

As you can see, creating a healthy routine for your dog requires a few different elements.

1) Need to Feed the Right Food

Hill’s Science Diet provides pet parents with the best dog and cat food to help their pets achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Don’t forget that your pet’s overall caloric intake includes their treats. Be sure to understand the caloric value of the treats you are providing. For more information on the impact of snacks and scraps, please visits Hill’s Treat Translator.

2) Get Plenty of Exercise

Exercise is so important for pets. It provides them with both mental and physical stimulation, and is crucial to their overall health. Although my husband and I work full time, we are sure to make play time and exercise a priority for Rooney.

3) Track Your Pet’s Weight and Progress

I am a fan of calendars, and I believe they can lead to success in many facets of our lives. Hill’s seems to be on the same wavelength as myself. Not only are they providing pet parents will veterinary recommended foods to help pets maintain a healthy weight, they are also providing pet parents with the tools to accomplish this goal.

Hill’s has created this amazing calendar to help you stay on track toward your pet’s healthy weight. If you decide to Create a Healthy Routine for your pet, please don’t forget to weigh your pet regularly.
