When training with your dog, it is really important that you have a high-value treat.
The high-value treat for your dog should be the treat your dog absolutely has to have! The treat that will make their hard work worth it. Some pet parents or trainers like to use cheese or hotdogs of other types of human food as a high-value treat. While Rooney certainly considers human foods to be high-value, they can sometimes upset his stomach. Additionally, he has a difficult time distinguishing between high-value treats for him and cheese for us. Therefore, I like to try and find doggy specific high-value treats.
Petcurean’s new Spike Treats are the high-value treat for Rooney.
Rooney and I recently had the chance to try the Grain Free Duck Jerky for Dogs and he LOVES them! As a matter of fact, he remembered that I had them in my hiking backpack, and he kept waiting by my backpack earlier this week.
Here is what I love about these treats:
- They are grain-free and, therefore, do not interfere with Rooney’s grain-free diet.
- Spike Treats contain chia, pomegranate and kale which provide a nutrient rich treat.
- They also include pumpkin, which serves as a good source of beta-carotene and fiber!
- They include a highly digestible protein source, in this case, Duck!
Since these treats are high-value and healthy for Rooney, here is what I plan to teach him using these treats:
- Recall: Rooney and I have worked on recall before, and this is definitely a high-value treat exercise. I hope to be able to really improve his recall using the Spike Treats.
- Not Jumping on Guests: This is really of matter of training Rooney on basic manners but is still very important. I hope to be able to finally bring people in the house without Rooney taking out their knees.
With this kind of high-value treat, what will you teach your dog?
Disclaimer: I am a Petcurean Blogger Advocate. I have been compensated in exchange for providing my opinion. However, My Kid Has Paws only discusses products I truly believe in. In fact, I feed Petcurean to Rooney every day.

February 3, 2016 at 4:05 pmHigh-value treats are so important for training recall, I completely agree – and I love that they’re more than just meat, and have healthy add-ins on their ingredient list. That’s a treat to feel good about!
