Choosing the Right P.L.A.Y. Dog Bed Size – A Lesson in Estimation

So, I think I’m pretty good at estimating. I don’t try clothes on before I buy them and usually things work out. However, estimating the size of something for Rooney is a completely different story.

I’m sure I’m not the only dog mom in the world who has ordered the wrong size dog bed before, so I thought I would share my experience in ordering Rooney’s P.L.A.Y. bed in case it is helpful to others.

Here it goes…

4.5 years ago when I began carving out this delightful slice of the internet I call, My Kid Has Paws, I had just switched jobs and was working for a startup in San Francisco. Each day I would take a stroll from the Montgomery BART station to my office on Bryant Street. One day, I noticed right there on Second Street was a pet company called P.L.A.Y. At this time I was still trying to gain traction and work with pet brands to create content, but I went online to investigate the brand further.

I was captured by their ability to marry eco-friendly materials and luxury. A theme they carry across their brand from dog beds to cat toys.

Fast-forward a few years and I find myself to be an official P.L.A.Y. affiliate. This may not seem like a big deal to most, but to a blogger achieving affiliate status with a brand you really love is a feat.

For a long time I had my eyes on their luxurious dog beds. I desperately wanted to order one for Rooney, so on Cyber Monday of last year I purchased Rooney a Large Snuggle Bed in the Husky Gray fabric.

Unfortunately, the Large was not the right size, as Rooney is a little too long for that size bed. You see, he could either fit his head in the snuggle bed, or his butt, but not both.

Thankfully, the person I spoke with from P.L.A.Y. also had a Corgi and knew that I needed to go one size up, so we moved up to a XL for Roo!

The reason that the bed needs to be bigger is partially due to Rooney’s length and also the different styles the P.L.A.Y. snuggle bed converts to. Specifically, the cup style was the one Rooney’s couldn’t seem to fit in with the Large bed.

As a Corgi parent, I occasionally make the mistake of estimating for Rooney based on his weight, and I forget that his body is really that of a medium dog, and I should order based on his length.

What’s so special about the Snuggle Bed?

So, you might be asking yourself, why did I feel the need to get the snuggle bed anyway?

  1. The snuggle bed converts into four different options which makes it luxurious and perfect for a dog who likes to burrow (Rooney).
  2. The Husky Gray color was the perfect color to match our bedroom decor, which may not matter to everyone, but nonetheless, I was very happy about it.
  3. The Canvas side is made from a dirt-resistant material which can make it a great bed for traveling in the car as well.
  4. The snuggle bed is Machine washable and dryer friendly
  5. According to P.L.A.Y.’s website, the bed is also: “Made in a facility that meets the strict quality standards for infant and children products”
  6. P.L.A.Y. has a Warm Bellies Program where they provide beds for shelter pets in need.

Needless to say I am very pleased with this bed for Rooney, and he really seems to be loving it as well.

As for the Large Bed that we bought…

Instead of returning the Large bed, I thought I might know a dog who would enjoy the Snuggle Bed as well. Meet Jimmy…

Jimmy is my parent’s chihuahua and he loves to burrow so I knew that he would really enjoy the P.L.A.Y. snuggle bed also!

Do you think your dog would be a fan of the P.L.A.Y. snuggle bed? Have you also had trouble ordering the right bed size for your pets?

Disclaimer: P.L.A.Y. provided us with a bed so that we could provide our honest opinion about their products. Additionally, we are P.L.A.Y. affiliates, so we may financially benefit if you make purchases through the links found on this post. I have seen the snuggle bed and I love it!! A bed is usually just a bed, and if your dog likes different styles, as mine do, that means buying a few to cover all their moods. With this one you can create so many different styles it’s bound to suit the tastes of any dog. I know mine would be thrilled.

Those beds look amazing! I’ve had occasion to have to fit harnesses and sweaters and the likes on Corgis and I’ve had the same experience where I fit what I thought was right only to discover I had to go way bigger.

WOW those beds look awesome. I had a snuggle bed for Layla but she was so not interested in it that it has become her place to hide her treats BOL but she is not short of beds either

I didn’t have an idea of how many types of beds for dogs existed I really appreciate this as I am looking into having a smaller dog and I will need to buy a bed for her or him. I am sure the PLAY SNUGGLE bed will be perfect.

This looks like the type of bed I need to get in triplicate! Or maybe a dozen, so each of my three dogs could have whatever style that they wanted! My dogs love their plush toys.

I love this and PLAY beds!! They have fabulous designs! On the topic of 🐶 beds.. I have too many. My husband recently found a small stash in the closet of the spare room. With four dogs you can never have too many but I seem to hard them!!

I think my dogs would like the snuggle beds but they also like to snuggle together, so I’m not sure the investment is needed. They are fans of flat beds, mostly so they can hang their heads off. They are sprawlers for sure. They aren’t fans of the big Orvis beds (I grew up in a house where these were everywhere for our spaniels and labs) but they love a nice, soft surface whether it’s their bed, my bed, or the sofa LOL. As far as size goes, I’d say right now a queen size bed seems to suffice.

Ingenious! What a clever and versatile idea. I can see anyone with a dog (and some large cats) absolutely adoring this. OK it’s getting to autumn here so can I have a human sized one please!!!

Something like this is well worth the investment as you can change it about while keeping their own doggy smell = comfort.

What a cool bed! I love how it converts to be used in several different ways, especially the cave style. I really like that it’s eco-friendly! Rooney & Jimmy are so adorable! I see they both love this bed.

I have a bad habit of buying beds that are too small – because I assume Ruby is smaller (more the size of a cat) than she is. She is not a corgi – but similar to what you said about Rooney, I sometimes go by her weight (which is not all that much more than a cat) i. She’s actually much longer and bigger than a cat and hangs out of a couple of her beds.

    These look adorable.

When it comes to beds, we buy the biggest we can get. Our girls like to stretch out … and when Cookie fully stretches out, she takes up the entire length of a human mattress. The bigger the better. Though with some types, such as the cool bed, there is a limit to how big they make them. The largest one is a pretty decent size, though.

With my big furry dogs, they have their beds built in…lol. However, this new pup has taken over the chair and I find him sleeping next to me in the morning so I have saved a lot of money by not buying any beds…take that back. Gusto’s only dog “bed” was his cuddle pup that had his litter mates scent on it and that he could lay on and feel secure.

The Snuggle beds look amazing! I had to laugh reading this at first because I am just terrible at sizing things up! I have purchased my Huskies beds that are perfect for a Poodle (and they give me some strange looks as they try to nest on the way-too-small bed), and the last water cooler pad I was sure I had the dimensions right…no such luck! But it turns out it works nicely as a cooler pillow on the bed! Not my initial intention, but I can plead, “Oh, I meant to do that!”

Sounds like the type of bed my mom’s dog could use. He is a Shih Tzu mix and is 20 pounds. He is low to the ground, but he is long and solid.
